RESIDENTS in Breightmet are being urged to be wary after a man blatantly tried to open the front door of a house before attempting to gain entry into three vehicles.

The would-be burglar was caught on camera outside a home on Breightmet Fold Lane after the occupants’ front door security system was alerted by the culprit’s movement.

In a 30-second CCTV clip, the man – wearing a camouflage face mask, a New York baseball cap and dark clothing – walks up to the front door and tries to open it before realising it is locked.

He then turns around and tries to break into the residents’ car, van and a neighbour’s vehicle – but he failed with each attempt before leaving.

The incident happened at around 4.30am on Friday, with a mobile phone notification alerting resident Warren Curnock, 59.

He said: “I was in bed and got an alert on my phone at 4.30am and thought ‘it’s a bit early for the milkman’.

“I checked the video and saw what had happened.

“After trying the front door he tried my car, my wife’s van and must have leant over the fence to get to my neighbour’s car.

“After watching the video, I went downstairs and outside and could see someone walking in the distance.

“I was told someone was trying doors on Red Lane just after he tried ours.

“There is a security light that comes on when the system is on but he didn’t bother to leave, he still tried to break in.”

Mr Curnock, who has reported the incident to the police, has shared footage of the brazen criminal’s efforts on social media to alert others who live in the area.

He added: “It is a sad world we live in when this is happening.

“He is just a chancer.

“I shared the video to let other people know about it.”
