We tend to think that giving our homes a makeover is a relatively new phenomenon.

This advertising picture from 1970 shows a room set couples aspired to with embossed anaglypta wallpaper which looked like stone, the space age lamp and the living flame electric fire complete with teak surround - yours for £48 10s and 10d. The pipe and slippers were optional!
