A woman almost had her neck sliced by broken glass after being shoved into a bottle shelf in an unprovoked attack in a Blackburn supermarket.

On Thursday evening, Dominique Ryan, who lives in the town was shopping in Heron Foods on Rothesay Road in Shadsworth.

Ms Ryan said she entered the shop with the intention of buying a few beers for herself and her friend, and was elbowed in the side by a woman and pushed into some fridges.

She said: "I knew she'd done it on purpose but I apologised, saying, 'oh sorry, I didn't mean to bump into you', not wanting to make anything of it, but then as I made my way to the tills with eight Budweisers, I could see her coming down the central aisle, and she just rammed me into some shelves that had a load of glass bottles on them.

"The shelves collapsed on top of me on the floor, and the bottles smashed on the floor, and the beer I had smashed and went all over me.

"Then some of the smashed glass ended up in my neck."

Ms Ryan said the attack 'came from nowhere' and has left her extremely shocked and shaken.

Staff from the shop took Ms Ryan, who has lived in Shadsworth for around 30 years, into the back office while the police were called.

She added: "The girls from the shop were lovely, and they said I needed to go with them as my neck was bleeding. And they called the police too.

"I didn't feel anything at the time as I was just really mad and shocked, but it was right next to my jugular so could've been so much worse, thankfully it wasn't."

Apart from some severe aches and pains, Ms Ryan was not badly injured and is recovering at home, although she says she wants the police to find the person who did this to her.

She said: "The mentality of some people is crazy. It came out of nowhere. I've lived round here for 30 years and have never seen that woman before, and have no idea who she is.

"I just want to know if she's been arrested as there was absolutely no need for her to attack me like that."

A spokesperson for the police said: "We were called after reports of an assault at a shop in Rothesay Road, Blackburn, at 5.28pm on May 6.

"It appears a female suspect has barged another woman into a shelf containing bottles, causing a number of items to smash.

"The victim has fallen to the floor and suffered a small cut to her neck.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
