A couple were left stranded on the hard shoulder of a motorway after a taxi driver chucked them out for no apparent reason.

On Saturday April 24 at around 3am, North West Motorway Police received reports that there were two pedestrians on the M6 motorway, close to junction 27 on the southbound side.

Patrols arrived and found a couple had been thrown out of a taxi they were travelling in and left on the hard shoulder.

After some enquiries, police discovered the couple had money to pay for their fare and couldn't establish a valid reason as to why they were asked to get out of the taxi.

A spokesperson for the motorway police said: "On Saturday April 24 at 3am, reports were received of pedestrians on the M6 motorway, near to junction 27 on the southbound carriageway.

"When patrols attended the innocent couple, had been ejected from a taxi and dumped on the hard shoulder.

"The couple did have money to pay the fare and no reason was found as to why they were ejected.

"Officers took the couple off the network and dropped them safely home."

Investigating officers duly contacted the taxi licensing officers and made further enquires as to what had actually happened.

The spokesperson added: "The taxi licensing department decided to revoke his licence with immediate effect, in the interests of public safety.

"There was no excuse for abandoning/dumping the occupants at the side of the motorway."
