IT cost over £388,000 to build and yet it lasted for just over a decade.

These pictures show Blackburn House on Heys Lane, Livesey, under construction in 1971.

Funded by the Home Office the residential centre which at the time was known as ‘an approved school’ would house boys aged 11 to 18.

One of the key features was the indoor swimming pool which, due to a lack of facilities in Blackburn at the time, would be used by other local schools on a rota basis.

Blackburn House closed in 1982 and the buildings were occupied by the Ashleigh Centre for a while.
