Police are investigating an incident of racism after an abusive message was sent to a League One football player. 

On Tuesday, police were made aware that a racist message had been sent on social media to a footballer playing for Blackpool FC.

The message was sent following Tuesday night's clash between the seasiders and Sunderland FC, in which Blackpool won 1-0.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Lancashire police strongly condemns all forms of racism.

"The force takes hate crime very seriously and this behaviour will not be tolerated in our communities.

"We are committed to tackling all crime motivated by hate and prejudice and we would urge anyone who has been a victim of a hate crime to have the confidence to come forward and report it to police.

"Victims will always be dealt with professionally and sympathetically."
