IT was one of the most memorable features of Blackburn town centre - the spiral ramp outside the market that led to a footbridge over Ainsworth Street connecting to the shopping centre.
These pictures are from 1971 when the revolutionary design - no pun intended - became a reality.
From them you can see that it presented quite an engineering challenge requiring a bespoke framework to support the concrete ramp.
If you came off the bottom of the ramp you had the option of heading into the market - or the St John’s Tavern.
Both the ramp and St John’s Tavern were demolished as The Mall was built and the bus station now stands on the former market site.
