Temporary traffic lights caused 'unnecessary delays' to motorists all weekend when no work appeared to be taking place on the pavement.

The work by Electricity North West began on Redlam, Blackburn last week and is expected to last until Wednesday April 21 according to signage. A small area of the pavement had been dug-up and refilled but temporary traffic lights were in place throughout the weekend when no work was taking place.

Electricity North West said the barriers were for 'safety reasons'.

One motorist who uses the stretch daily said: “I can’t see the point of leaving the temporary traffic lights on all weekend when you could have easily put them to the side for two days.

“The work is on the pavement and the hole has been filled in.

“It is things like this annoy drivers the most. We realise that work has to be done but this is ridiculous really if you think about it.”

Another motorist who lives near by said: “At rush hour there are going to be huge queues. Why not just put them aside for half hour as you can see the work is on the pavement and not on the road. You can still have the path cordoned off.”

A spokesperson for Electricity North West said: “As the path hadn’t yet been reinstated following work on the underground power cables, the barriers remained in place for safety reasons over the weekend.

“We agree our work in advance with the local council and will have competed the work by Tuesday evening (April 20).”
