The murder trial over the death of a 65-year-old man who was found in his flat with head injuries is set to begin today. 

Stuart Newton was found in his Oswaldtwistle home on Thursday February 13 2020, but died in hospital the following day.

A 30-year-old man was charged with his murder and will appear at Preston Crown Court today.

Police were called to the property, in Worsley Court, around lunchtime, and found Mr Newton with serious head injuries

He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital but died from his injuries on Friday February 14.

A post mortem examination gave a cause of death as blunt head trauma.

At the time, Detective Chief Inspector Lee Wilson, of the Force Major Investigation Team, said: “My thoughts and those of my team remain with Mr Newton’s loved ones at this tragic time. They continue to be supported by specially trained officers.

“If you have any information that could help with our investigation and haven’t already contacted us, please do.”

Nathan Scott Williams, 30, of Mount Pleasant Road, Oswaldtwistle, was charged with murder.

Williams, who is now 31, will appear in front of a jury of 12 people.

Presiding over the trial is judge Suzanne Goddard QC, and Williams will be represented by Timothy Storrie QC and junior counsel Philip Holden.

Prosecuting is Andrew Ford. 

The trial is set to last around seven days and a number of witnesses will be called to give evidence.
