The reopening of a borough's household waste recycling centres without the need for online advance booking has gone well, senior councillors have been told.

Blackburn with Darwen's two tips reopened fully on Thursday April 1.

Borough environment boss Cllr Jim Smith praised the 'common sense' of residents who did not swamp the centres at George Street West, Blackburn, and Spring Vale Road, Darwen.

He was asked about the change at Blackburn with Darwen Council's Executive Board on Thursday.

Conservative group leader Cllr John Slater said: "Jim, Have you seen an upturn in the use of the tips now we don't have to book online and has it been manageable for the staff?"

Cllr Smith said: "We haven't received any complaints about it. Obviously we haven't got all the data back yet. I presume it's working well.

"I think that people of Blackburn and Darwen have a lot of common sense and have used the common sense and not all rushed there on Thursday which was my big worry to be honest."

Borough leader Cllr Mohammed Khan said: "I have my personal experience. I think it's going very well. It's in my patch. I haven't seen any complaints.

"I was there a couple of days ago and it was very smooth."

Adult services boss Cllr Mustafa Desai said: "I had the opportunity to visit the centre as well last week and it was absolutely wonderfully well managed. I commend the people there for doing a sterling job. There were no problems at all."
