Detectives investigating a serious assault have released an image of the man attacked as they continue to appeal for information.

Police were called at about 7.30am on Sunday following a report that a man had been found with serious injuries near Ferndale, Birch Green in Skelmersdale.

The man, 37, had been making his way to work before being targeted, and was taken to Aintree Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

An investigation was launched and enquiries are continuing to identify the offenders, with detectives believing the incident took place close to Firbeck.

Det Sgt Diane Higham, of Skelmersdale CID, said: “This was a horrific assault which has left a man in a very serious condition in hospital.

“The level of violence used is frankly obscene and the victim is lucky to be alive.

"We hope this image, which shows the severity of the injuries inflicted, will prompt members of the community to come forward.

“I would also appeal to anyone who may have information which could help us piece together what has happened and to help identify the offenders to contact us.”

Extra police patrols have been in the area over the weekend and will continue over the next few days.

Please feel free to approach officers if you have any information or concerns.
