THERE is currently a lot of investment going into the Blakey Moor area of Blackburn to transform it into the centre of a new cultural and leisure quarter in Blackburn town centre.

This photograph from the archive shows it in a different era - we think in the late 1950s.

The picture was taken from the roof of the new Blackburn College building and shows the distinctive ‘old’ college building on the left. Further back you can see part of King George’s Hall and in the centre of the picture, the old market clock stands proud.

Look off into the distance on the right of the picture and you can see the shadowy silhouettes of the various chimneys belonging to the breweries and mills which were still very much part of the town centre landscape.

Note too the number of houses in the area at this time all of which have been cleared as the area redeveloped.
