A DISQUALIFIED driver seen behind the wheel by two police officers who both recognised him pleaded not guilty when he got to court.

Blackburn magistrates heard Akib Mukhtar was convicted after a trial and the sentencing bench ordered him to pay the full £600 costs.

Mukhtar, 25, of The Hedgerow, Blackburn, was also made subject to a community order for 18 months with 30 days rehabilitation activity requirement and a curfew for four months between 8pm and 8am. He was banned from driving for 18 months and ordered to pay £95 victim surcharge.

Janice Vallance, prosecuting, said the officers, who knew the defendant, saw him driving on Preston New Road and stopped him.

"Despite that he pleaded not guilty," said Miss Vallance.

Richard Prew, defending, said his client was convicted after a trial and still maintained his position.
