PARKS in East Lancashire have been plagued with litter left behind by people getting out to enjoy Tuesday's temperatures of 20 degrees C.

The easing of lockdown restrictions which allows people to meet in groups of six saw people enjoy the sunshine, however Towneley Park in Burnley was left covered with bottles, cans, disposable barbecues and wrappers.

A spokesperson for Burnley Council said: “It’s great that we have so many beautiful parks in our borough that everyone can enjoy, whatever time of the year.

“What’s not so great is the litter and damage caused by a selfish minority of visitors.
“There are plenty of litter bins in our parks. If someone can bring stuff to the park, they can take it home with them as well."

"Staff and volunteers work throughout the year to make Towneley Hall and Park one of the best visitor attractions in the north west. Just one day and the mindless actions of a few destroy all the hard work.

"Simple message - please dispose of your litter responsibly. Either put it in a bin or take it home, and help protect our parks."

Witton Park in Blackburn was also strewn with litter, however not quite a severe, with bags, boxes and bottles being left in the park.

A spokesperson for Witton Park Arena said: "Lovely to see so many people being active yesterday down at Witton Park, for the outdoor classes, football and families enjoying the sunshine.
"Please can we ask if you do visit, that you clear away your rubbish so you don’t spoil it for others."
