Dirt, grime, cobwebs, chewing gum, mud and leaves are just some of the grim sights people are having to endure as they wait to catch the bus, claims one commuter.

Images sent to the Lancashire Telegraph show the extent of the mess at Blackburn Bus Station, as one bus user branded the uncleanliness as 'lazy' and 'disgusting'.

The man, who did not wish to be named, took the photos over the course of a few weeks and noted chewing gum, cobwebs, and drink spillages on the benches and the seats within the bus terminal, as well as mud, leaves and more chewing gum stuck to the bottom of the glass doors.

The man said: "If you walk through Blackburn bus station you will see all the doors - there's gum, cobwebs, cocoa and coffee from the canteen on the walls and benches and on the seats.

"It's right in middle all the way to the top of bus station.

"The people working there are all lazy; there's a pandemic going on an we are supposed to be keeping good hygiene but people can't even be bothered to clean the space around them.

"No-one is cleaning, they're just all standing around talking, the mess is really disgusting."

Blackburn with Darwen Council's environment boss, Cllr Jim Smith refuted the allegation that the bus station's staff were lazy, saying the area is 'cleaned constantly every day'.

He said: "Staff clean that bus station all day long and do a good job overall.

"Of course there's going to be stuff that they miss, or stuff that blows in when the doors open - pigeons even like to come inside the bus station when no-one is looking.

"The buses and the bus station is cleaned every night and we have a team of Covid cleaners cleaning all day.

"If there's a bit of rain or wind or mud then of course things like this are going to happen as people are in and out of there all day.

"And the amount of people who treat the bus station like a picnic area sometimes, it's no surprise a bit of muck sometimes slips through the net."
