Roads across East Lancashire are being gritted tonight as snow is predicted over the weekend.

Priority routes in Burnley, Hyndburn, Ribble Valley, Rossendale and Pendle will be gritted this evening as temperatures are expected to reach zero across the county.

The Met office has predicted wintry showers which will begin this evening and continue over night and into Saturday across the north west.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders said, “Bands of showery rain will continue to cross the UK today before cold air from the north pushes across the country on Friday.

“A cold front will bring a band of rain and blustery conditions for many and there will be a marked drop in temperatures, with some places seeing a fall of 5 or 6 C between today and Friday. There will be some wintry showers in places with some lying snow possible at times over hills further north.”

Priority routes only cover a third of the highway network and ice patches can develop on treated surfaces caused by water run-off from fields or other sources.
