AN East Lancashire County councillor is calling for action over trials bike and quad riders speeding around a borough.

Oswaldtwistle's Cllr Peter Britcliffe has been contact by several Hyndburn residents alarmed at the problem.

Police are appealing for information from the public to track down those responsible for the problem.

Cllr Britcliffe said: "There has been a recent spate of scrambler bikes and quads driving at incredible speeds around our local parks, nature reserves and side roads.

"They are an accident waiting to happen and are causing a vast amounts of damage in our local area

"It is only a matter of time before somebody gets severely hurt or killed by one of these vehicles.

"Something must be done.The areas where they are travelling are meant to be safe places where people should be able to enjoy without the worry of either being hit by a vehicle or abused by its rider."

One local resident told him: "In the last few weeks I have seen a large quad bike riding around the field in the centre of Rhyddings Park on a Saturday afternoon when it was filled with people and a group of three scrambler bikes travelling along the paths around Foxhill Nature Reserve."

A police spokesman said: "We are aware of this issue and we have an ongoing operation, working alongside our partners, to tackle this nuisance behaviour.

"We would also ask that the public support us in this by passing on any information about the identities of those responsible, or any photographs or moving footage which could assist us in our investigation."
