A man had to be rescued by the police, coastguard and fire service after becoming stuck in the mud, unable to move.

HM Coastguard from Fleetwood and Lytham were called out at 3.54pm on Saturday after receiving a report of a person stuck in the mud on the river bank in Freckleton.

It is believed the man lost his balance before getting stuck in the mud, and used the What 3 Words app to inform the emergency services of his location.

Lancashire Telegraph:

A Lytham coastguard spokesperson said: "We were called out at 3.54 this afternoon to reports of a person stuck in the mud on the river bank in the Freckleton area.

"A multi agency response resulted in a successful rescue.

"On scene were ourselves, HM Coastguard Fleetwood, police, fire service and the ambulance service."

The police are now urging people to download the What 3 Words app as they believe they would have struggled to find the man, prolonging the possibility of danger.

A spokesperson for the police said: "On Saturday, Fylde officers attended an incident on the Freckleton Marsh land where a male had lost his balance and became stuck in the mud.

"With the assistance of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard Lytham and North West Ambulance Service the male was rescued from the mud and given medical attention by Paramedics.

Lancashire Telegraph:

"We were successful in locating the male due to the use of the 'What 3 Words' app.

"This app is easy to use and should you become lost or need emergency assistance, the app will provide you with three different words for your exact location which you can then provide to emergency services or anyone else who has the app.

"Should we had not received the three words from the app, we would've struggled locating the male and therefore want to ask everyone to consider downloading this app."
