CALLS for action have been made about a derelict industrial building after another fire.

Firefighters and police were called to the incident at Stonebridge Mill on Stonebridge Lane in Oswaldtwistle at 6.18pm on Thursday night.

The multi-agency 'Operation Merlin' was launched with four crews battling the blaze and the road was closed during the night.

Nearby residents were told to keep their windows closed due to the fumes.

An investigation was still taking place yesterday morning into the cause of the fire and two pumps were still at the scene.

Hyndburn MP and St Andrews ward councillor Sara Britcliffe says there have been lots of concerns on the site.

She said: "I have been in consultation with the fire service about this as it is not the first time this has happened there.

"I think it must be the fourth or fifth time something has happened.

"The fire service have been doing well to try to prevent it but I think the council needs to recognise we need to work together to stop it.

"These fires have been affecting the lives of the residents. We need to make sure that we all do what we can to stop it happening again."

Leader of Hyndburn Council, Cllr Miles Parkinson OBE, said: "This is going to be a multi-agency approach to tackle this situation.

"It is disturbing the amount of incidents in the area and a cost to the public purse.

"The council were there and had to provide a digger from one of our depot to help with the fire.

"The different agencies are looking forward to find results to stop this kind of thing happening again."

Acting crew manager Adam Baron, from Blackburn station, said: "One stinger was used which is a special appliance that gets a high quantity of water onto the fire.

"There were also two jets and four breathing apparatus at the height of the fire.

"Operation Merlin was declared and we gave advice to local residents to stay in their house and keep windows shut due to the fumes coming from the fire.

"We are not sure of the cause of the fire and it was confined to one corner of the unit.

"We left the scene at midnight and no-one was injured in the incident."
