A HOUSING group that has proposed building up to 90 assisted living flats on derelict land has carried out a range of consultations.

The land is currently owned by Burnley Hospital, with the proposal to build the flats having first been made by Burnley based homes provider The Calico Group in late 2020.

The group now has partnered with East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, Burnley Borough Council, the University of Central Lancashire, Lancashire County Council, Participation Works and architects Brock Carmichael on the scheme, all of which have given their input to the plans

Calico Homes director of development Wendy Malone said: "It’s great to hear such insightful comments from the consultations.

"We are keen to include the general public in this process and will take in to account the feedback to create safe, efficient homes for those who need them.

"Although it’s still in the early stages, I look forward hearing more from local people as this project develops."

As well as housing, the Calico Group works the health care and wellbeing sectors, with the proposed Burnley scheme making up part of this remit.

The development aims to build 90 accessible extra care apartments and a community hub, which would provide specialist assisted living accommodation in a neighbourhood setting for the first time in the town.

As well as consulting with its partners on the scheme, Calico Homes has also begun a series of community consultations in order to best understand the needs of people in the area.

Burnley Council deputy leader and executive member for health and wellbeing Lian Pate has been supportive of the proposed scheme.

She said: "It's exciting to see this proposed scheme to provide specialist medical support to improve the quality of life of local people.

"I'll be following this project closely and I'm glad that people have been given the opportunity to give their views on this scheme."
