A rented property on a residential street which became an eyesore after an offensive slur was painted on the front door, is still causing issues.

The mess in the back yard of the house, on Whitehall Street in Nelson, as well as the front door graffiti, has still not been cleared, with residents now saying they are experiencing problems with their own properties due to putrid smells and damp seeping through the walls.

One householder, who contacted the Lancashire Telegraph in December to complain about the property, said since the problems were highlighted with the council and the estate agents, as early as last March, absolutely nothing has been done.

The resident said: "We've again contacted both the council and estate agents, and we are told by the council the matter has now been passed onto someone called Tim from the antisocial behaviour team.

"We have contacted him several times also, but things have gotten worse.

"Round the back of the house, the wall joining ours to next door is starting to fall away.

"We have paid a lot of money out in pest control, which the council will confirm, and the rats have now gone, but the smell of what can only be described as dead rats is still lingering.

"All parties involved in this continue with their ignorance and refuse to accept responsibility."

Last years, neighbours in the street, many of whom own their houses said the estate agents who manage the problem house, Eafield and Maple in Accrington, were very much aware of the issues, but nothing has been done.

The resident added: "There is now water leaking from somewhere in the back yard, which is destroying our property and costing us money.

"The kitchen wall between ours and next door is damp, and without a workman or plumber we can't say where it's coming from, but it's definitely not our plumbing.

"The letting agency said they will send a plumber out on two occasions but no-one has been out.

"And to our knowledge there has been no-one going in or coming out of the property."

Earlier this year Pendle Council contacted the tenant’s letting agent to see if the tenant needed any support and about removing the graffiti.

However, the council was not granted permission by the landlord to do any work on the property.

Tim Horsley, Pendle Council’s Community Protection Coordinator, said: “This situation is very unfair on neighbours of the property and it is spoiling their quality of life.

“We’re looking into what can be done to tackle this as a matter of urgency.”

A spokesperson for Eafield and Maple said while they couldn't discuss the details of any specific individual they were aware of an anti social tenant and said if the property was now in fact vacant, and confirmation of this was received then they would attend to secure it and clear up the mess.

The spokesperson added: "We cannot get rid of any of the rubbish or mess until we know that the property is empty.

"If the tenant has left we will clear it.

"Eviction proceedings had begun to remove this tenant last year, but due to eviction laws changing during the Covid pandemic we have been prohibited from continuing with the proceedings.

"We will get the property checked today and if there is evidence that the tenant has left we will move the rubbish.

"Unfortunately, as letting agents, we cannot manage people's behaviour, but we would like nothing more than for the tenant to have left this property."
