A man has been charged after police discovered an extensive cannabis grow spanning several floors inside a former Home Bargains store.

On Thursday, police raided the former discount shop after concerns had been raised by members of the public.

Officers say that inside was an 'extensive and sophisticated grow' with a 'significant' potential street value.

One man was arrested, charged, and was due to appear before magistrates on Friday.

A spokesperson for the police said: "On Thursday March 4, Lancaster and Morecambe Intel Unit with support from our Target Team and Local Policing Teams executed a warrant on Euston Road at the site of the former Home Bargains.

"This was following concerns raised by members of the public.

"Inside was an extensive and sophisticated suspected cannabis grow over several floors with a significant potential street value.

"One man was arrested inside the building and following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, Sokol Xheka, 37, was charged with cannabis cultivation.

"He was due to appear at court this morning.

"An investigation is continuing into this crime.

"All this was possible due to the vigilance and support of local people.

"Be reassured that we will investigate reports of this nature and take appropriate action.

"Some people believe that cannabis is a harmless drug but it funds organised crime and promotes human trafficking, often with violence."
