A playground which is undergoing a major refurbishment has been trashed by vandals, just weeks before it was set to re-open for children.

The £225,000 improvement works to the play area in Hurst Grange Park began in January, with new paths and surfacing being installed as well as new equipment for toddlers and juniors.

The park, in Penwortham, Preston, was due to re-open at the end of March but on Monday evening, vandals broke into the site and trashed materials and caused damage to equipment belonging to the contractors.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for South Ribble Borough Council said: "The area is currently closed for refurbishments however, the site compound was broken into last night with damage caused to the site and materials which were being stored there to use as part of the refurbishment.

"Our contractors on site are now working with police to get make sure the person or persons responsible are found.

"This will no doubt cause a slight setback in progress but the play area is still on track to open in early April."

The play area was scheduled for completion by the end of March/beginning of April and up until Monday things appeared to be going well.

The Friends of Hurst Grange Park, a group of environmental enthusiasts who enjoy taking care of the park, posted on their Facebook group on Wednesday saying: "Last night vandals trashed the play area which was nearing completion.

"The contractor’s materials and equipment was damaged, the portable toilet was filled with sand and tipped over and some resin used to lay the rubber surfacing was opened and thrown around.

"This resulted in the police and the fire brigade being called.

"The fire brigade have dealt with the resin spillage some of which went on the main path through the park.

"This resulted in an area being taped off as there was a worry that the resin could cause harm to dogs paws.

"We understand that the path is safe now, but will remain taped off to ensure any remaining resin has completely dried.

"A sharp knife was used to slash through one of the temporary retaining straps and bags of rubber.

"The thought of youths carrying such lethal weapons in Penwortham is very worrying.

"This mindless damage may well delay the opening of the play area."
