Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of GBH after an 89-year-old man was attacked on an Aldi car park.
The incident happened just before 8.10am on Thursday morning and left the pensioner with a fractured hip.
Rumours circulated on social media following the assault, and police have since provided a statement.
A spokesperson for the police said: "We are aware of concerns on social media regarding an assault in St Annes this morning and just wanted to update you on the latest developments.
"We were called just before 8.10am to a report that an 89-year-old man had been assaulted in the Aldi carpark in Clifton Drive.
"He has been taken to hospital for treatment on a suspected fractured hip.
"Following swift enquiries officers identified two suspects who have since been arrested on suspicion of GBH.
"The two boys – both aged 14 and who are both from St Annes – are currently in custody."
