THE headteacher of Burnley Schools Sixth Form congratulated pupils on a successful first year Burnley FC operational director Brendan Flood visited the school last night to present awards at its first ever prize night.

The school replaced Habergham and St Theodore's sixth forms.

Pupils are currently being taught in the former Barden High School premises which will be demolished and levelled when new premises are complete.

The new building will be on former Barden High School's playing fields as part of the £250m Building Schools for the Future scheme.

It is due to open in September 2008 for all pupils aged 16 and over in the area.

Headteacher Stuart Smith last night said he was delighted with the first set of A-level results. He said: "We were thrilled with our achievement of 38 per cent of grades being at A or B in this our first year of operation.

"A 95 per cent pass rate across all subjects also represents a considerable achievement. Seventeen subject areas achieved a 100 per cent pass rate."

Eleven students achieved three or more A grades in their chosen courses. Of these students, Janine Hartley had earned national recognition in scoring one of the top five marks in the country in psychology. She is now reading social and political sciences at Robinson College, Cam-bridge.

Sean Durkin has taken up his place to read physics at Christ Church College, Oxford, while Hamza Al-Sebai is reading mathe-matics at Clare College, Cambridge.

Mr Smith finished by congratulating all the students on their results and recognised that they were due reward for their efforts over the last two years.

He said: "We have a highly talented and conscientious team of staff who will support all students to achieve their potential and move on to the next stage of their learning."
