Two areas of East Lancashire now have coronavirus infection rates below the national average.

As of February 11, the national average rate of infection was 142 cases per 100,000 people.

Burnley and Rossendale currently have a rolling seven-day infection rate of 138.3 per 100,000 people and 135.7 per 100,000 people respectively.

Out of the remaining boroughs in the rest of the county, only Wyre has an infection rate below the national average at 112.4 infections per 100,000 people.

It's not all grim news though, as infection rates across East Lancashire continue to fall, with every borough recording a rate below 200 cases per 100,000 people, except Blackburn with Darwen, where the rolling rate of infection in the seven days to February 12 is 239.2 per 100,000.

Similarly, infection rates across the rest of Lancashire are also falling, with only Preston and South Ribble having recorded rates above 200 per 100,000 people.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 16 (5 per cent) have seen a rise in case rates and 299 (95 per cent) have seen a fall.

Middlesbrough has the highest rate in England, with 449 new cases recorded in the seven days to February 12 – the equivalent of 318.5 cases per 100,000 people.

This is down from 356.8 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to February 5.

Corby in Northamptonshire has the second highest rate, down from 432.0 to 315.7, with 228 new cases.

Sandwell in the West Midlands is in third place, down from 409.5 to 291.7, with 958 new cases.
