TRIBUTES have been paid to a former amateur international footballer, whose grandson has also represented his country, who has died.

Guy Shuttleworth was a pupil Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Blackburn, in the 1930s and 1940s before going to Kings College, Cambridge.

Mr Shuttleworth died peacefully on January 21 aged 94.

The school paid tribute saying that he was a ‘very popular pupil...both sporty and academic’.

A spokesman said: “He excelled at both cricket and football, playing cricket for Lancashire and was later a star player for Corinthian Casuals who were one of the best teams in the Isthmian League."

Mr Shuttleworth played for the Corinthian-Casuals in the 1956 FA Amateur Cup Final while in 1949 he won an amateur international cap for England in football.

Having gained a masters degree in mathematics, Mr Shuttleworth chose a career in teaching.

He met his wife Tanya while working as a schoolmaster in Mill Hill in London and then moved to St Peter’s School in York where he had a very successful career as a form master, housemaster and head of department.

On his retirement St Peter’s introduced an annual award, the Guy Shuttleworth Cup, for attitude and effort in sport. After St Peter’s, Mr Shuttleworth and his wife enjoyed a happy retirement in Eastbourne.

His wife Tanya said: “I met Guy when I was 17 and he was at Mill Hill School. My thoughts of Guy have always been ‘and suddenly I saw you there and then the sun shone everywhere’ and this was true of every day. I have been so blessed.”

Daughter Sally Chilwell said: “Although dad excelled academically and on the sports field, this is not what he will be remembered for by his family, friends and colleagues who were lucky enough to have him in their lives.

“He was the most dedicated of teachers, a true gentleman in every sense of the word and someone who was held in very high esteem and affection by all who had the pleasure to know him. His smile, easy charm and interest in absolutely everyone he met made him a truly unique person.”

QEGS Headteacher Claire Gammon said: “We are very sad to hear of the passing of Guy Shuttleworth.

“He was a popular pupil, excelling both in sport and in his academic studies, the latter of which led to an illustrious career in education.

“He leaves an impressive sporting legacy, having represented the school, county and country across multiple disciplines.

“We send our condolences to his wife Tanya, his family and the many friends he made across his lifetime.”

Mr Shuttleworth leaves his wife Tanya, children Neil and Sally, grandchildren Tom, Amanda, Lucy, Ben and Alex and many friends.
