A NEW street in a housing development on the site of a closed chemical works is set to be named after one of its former owners.

Developer Auchshire Homes Limited wish to name the road Bowdler Close.

The short street of five homes is part of a a new-build residential development on the site of the former Eagle Chemical works located off Nook Lane and New Lane in Oswaldtwistle.

A report to Hyndburn Council's Cabinet Street Naming Committee on Wednesday says: "The name proposed is connected to the history of the location of the development site.

"The development site located at the former Eagle Chemical works.

"The developer wishes to suggest a new street name for the road accessed from the development - Bowdler Close.

"The naming suggestion is linked to the history of the site and the name Bowdler was the name of one of the owners of Eagle Chemical works that occupied the site.

"The company was set up by two men, Bowdler and Bickerdike - the latter was instrumental in helping to set up Blackburn College.

"The developer thought the name Bickerdike may be too much of a mouthful and of course Eagle is already used as a street name in Oswaldtwistle.

"St. Oswalds ward 's Cllr Glen Harrison indicated that the name suggestion was 'a good one'."
