A STREET has been closed after part of a building has collapsed overnight.

Market Street in Bacup is currently closed between Lord Street and Bankside Lane and police are asking residents to avoid the area.

Lancashire police have confirmed that the chimney stack at the former NatWest bank building has fallen and a roof is partially collapsed.

The police are being assisted by Lancashire County Council Highways at the scene.

A spokesperson for Rossendale police said: "Our officers are assisting LCC Highways at Market Street in Bacup. Part of a building has collapsed overnight.

"As a result, a road closure is on between Lord Street and Bankside Lane. Please avoid this area. We will update this post once we have more information in the morning."

A report made at 6am on the AA traffic website says: "Road closed due to part of a building collapsing overnight on A681 Market Street both ways from Bankside Lane to Union Street.

"Traffic is coping well. Bank Street, Lord Street and Bankside Lane are also closed."
