A SCHOOLBOY has managed to raise more than £600 for the Darwen Food Larder by taking to the streets of his hometown and running 100km.

DACA pupil Harrison Waite had been trying to generate cash for his football team at Fleetwood FC Academy and it prompted him to try to go the extra mile to make a difference in his local community.

So the 11-year-old defender set out to get £100 for the good cause but then beat all expectations.

Proud mum Alison said: “It started off with us sponsoring him £1 per kilometre and he was going to do 100 in January.

“He wanted to do something for the benefit of Darwen.

“We have never used the Food Larder but we know people are struggling in the current climate and especially with Covid too and if it was something for the community.

“He has enjoyed running and has done 75km so far but he is starting to feel the aches and pains but he wants to do it and is nearly there.”

His runs have taken him on different routes through Darwen and even as far as Ewood but in the past fortnight he has been doing it from home as his family have been self-isolating.

Alison added: “He has still been doing them through the house and to the garden gate outside.

“It has been more like a bleep test for him and he has been feeling a bit dizzy and tiring.

“Our self isolation ends on Friday so he wants to do one big run to finish it off.

“There has been a really good response on the Justgiving page and people are impressed that an 11-year-old has been doing it and seeing him do something nice for the area.”

Alison added he has learnt a lot in the testing weather conditions.

She said: “The first time it really snowed this month he went out along Priory Drive and it was quite slippy so he ran on the grass and he did not see a rabbit hole and hurt his heel.

“We learnt not to run on the grass as you don’t know what is under the snow!”
