INFECTION rates have dropped in all six East Lancashire boroughs - with five boroughs recording significant drops.

Last week, infections rates hit over 800 for Burnley, but this week, rates have dropped dramatically in all areas of East Lancashire, showing hope that national restrictions are beginning to have an effect on the spread of the virus.

Burnley does still have the highest infection rate in Pennine Lancashire, however, it has fallen from 890.7 per 100,000 to 692.8 per 100,000 in the most recent figure.

Blackburn with Darwen has the third worst rate in East Lancashire, however the borough has recorded a significant decrease since last week, with the rate now standing at 605.9 per 100,000 while last week the infection rate stood at 710.1 per 100,000.

Hyndburn has also recorded a drop in the number of cases, however it is not quite as significant as the other areas of East Lancashire, with their rate now standing at 668.8 per 100,000 down from 688.5 per 100,000.

In Pendle, the infection rate is now 599.3 per 100,000 down from 768.6 per 100,000 - showing anything significant change in the borough.

Rossendale's rate now stands at 458.9 per 100,000 - a drop from last weeks rate of 562.4 per 100,000.

The Ribble Valley is seeing a similar picture, with the infection rate now 450.0 per 100,000, which has fallen from a rate of 560.0 per 100,000 last week.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 32, or 10 per cent, have seen a rise in case rates, 281, or 89 per cent, have seen a fall and two are unchanged.

The figures, for the seven days to January 18, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days (January 19-22) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Here is the list in full.

From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to January 18; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to January 18; rate of new cases in the seven days to January 11; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to January 11.
