In the foreground is the floodlit golf driving range which subsequently gave way to Blackburn Central High School.

Cicely Mill had recently been demolished when this photo was taken - you can see its footprint centre left. The Leeds-Liverpool Canal is on the left of the picture and on the horizon you can make out the tower of St James’ Church which is still standing today
