A Christmas Day party that was filmed and shared on social media has landed a reveller with a hefty Covid fine.

Police in Hyndburn have been made aware of several illegal gatherings underneath the M65 motorway at Huncoat in recent weeks.

And on Christmas Day evening, officers were sent to such a gathering, off Altham Lane, which involved around 100 people.

Police said the event was filmed by a party-goer and then shared on social media.

The video then came to the attention of the police who subsequently identified the person involved and handed them a Covid-19 fine.

A spokesperson for the police said: "The Hyndburn neighbourhood policing team have become aware of illegal gatherings underneath the M65 motorway at Huncoat.

"On Christmas Day evening there was a gathering which was conveniently filmed by a participant and shared on social media.

"Footage showed around 100 people in attendance and clearly breaching Covid guidelines.

"Following enquiries an individual was identified who was at the event providing DJ-ing services.

"This man has been traced, spoken to, provided with suitable advice and issued with a £200 fine.

"The neighbourhood policing team will be constantly monitoring such locations and should illegal events such as this one take place then further fines will be issued to participants in an attempt to prevent the spread of infections.

"Throughout this pandemic we have tried to take a common sense and proportionate approach to policing the regulations and this will continue.

"We will engage and encourage and explain but won’t hesitate to enforce where there are deliberate or flagrant breaches of the rules."
