Firefighters from across Lancashire have taken part in a gruelling 24 hour treadmill run, to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity.

Seven stations were involved in the challenge, including teams from Blackburn, Rawtenstall, Lancaster, Ormskirk, St Annes, and two teams from Leyland, and between them they narrowly missed out on hitting 1,000 miles, clocking up 978 miles in 24 hours.

The team at Blackburn ran more than 120 miles, with the team from Rawtenstall smashing more than 150 miles.

Station Manager Matt Armstrong who organised the event, said: "Our firefighters wanted to go the extra mile this month and help raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity which has suffered financially this year due to the Covid pandemic.

"We have a number of fit and competitive staff and we thought of combining these two attributes to see if we could raise money for the charity.

"It has been an outstanding effort by all the teams that have taken part and there will be some very sore muscles over the next few days.

"The seven teams have so far raised more than £3,500."

The challenge began on Monday lunchtime and ended at noon on Tuesday and was live-streamed on the fire service YouTube channel.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Huge credit to all who took part in this 24 hour treadmill challenge.

"A huge undertaking and just 22 miles short of 1,000 run by all.

"Fundraising total currently stands at £3,804 so thank you to everyone who dug deep both on the treadmill and into their pockets.

"Proud Lancashire."
