STUDENTS have been raising funds and spreading kindness to help people facing hardship during the festive season.

The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that many people in Blackburn are facing even greater hardship during the long, cold winter months. But pupils and staff at Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College (TIGHS) were determined to use their donations for this year’s Festive Winter Gift Programme.

As part of this year’s programme, students donated hygiene items and food for distribution to some of the town’s most vulnerable people. Funds were also raised to buy toys that were given to children, so that they too, could enjoy the festive season. Pupils also created hampers filled with food to bring comfort to the elderly living in Springfield Care Home in Blackburn.

Thanks to their efforts, the school was able to offer support to several charities including Blackburn Foodbank, Community Spirit, Night Safe and The Wish Centre.

The local homeless population, people facing financial hardship, local refugees, vulnerable teenagers, Royal Blackburn Hospital and women and children living in shelters, all benefited from the fundraising activities.

The school also joined with other Star Academies schools to take part in ‘Food for All Week’.

From December 7-13, all 29 schools across the Star Academies multi-academy trust aimed to distribute 50,000 food parcels and meals to those experiencing food poverty.

Amina Modan, Assistant Principal at TIGHS, said: "2020 has been an incredibly difficult year for many people in Blackburn, but our pupils have been working very hard to try to make a difference to the town’s vulnerable people.

“I have been completely overwhelmed by the response of our caring families who have all donated or fundraised and given that little bit more to help others experiencing severe hardship.

“Each year, during our Festive Winter Gift Programme, our pupils at TIGHS raise thousands of pounds in funds and other donations. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who offers their support which helps to spread kindness throughout our town.”
