SNOW is expected this evening and gritters will be out in full force tonight on the borough's roads.

Gritting will start in Blackburn and Darwen at 6pm this evening as road temperatures are expected to fall below zero in some areas.

A spokesperson for the council's road department said: "There's a surprise for you in the forecast! It's no surprise to us as we generally see a flurry of the white stuff in the first week of December.

"The weather radars look a bit erratic in terms of what we will expect, so keep your eyes peeled for after 7pm!"

Some higher areas could see up to 6cm of snow while the road temperature on higher roads is expected to fall below 0°C and ice patches could form overnight.

Snow, patchy rain and sleet will continue into the night and morning on higher grounds but in lower levels, the snow is not expected to settle.
