FIVE food establishments in East Lancashire have been given the worst food hygiene rating – zero – while more than 110 more have only received a rating of one.

Bosses of 120 food businesses in Blackburn, Darwen, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Rossendale and the Ribble Valley have all been told they need either urgent or major improvement to fall in line with government standards for food safety and hygiene.

Among other issues, many reasons for concern include kitchen cleanliness, the availability of hand washing facilities, pest control standards and system checks.

The ratings provide a basic picture of the standards of food hygiene found at the time of inspection.

They are available to view online on the Food Standard Agency’s (FSA) website and show that places such as GKFF Ltd in Accrington, The Grove Convenience Store, Padiham, Bombay Lounge Jubilee Stores, and Zorba Balti in Rawtenstall are all among the establishments falling short and in need of a major standards overhaul.

Meanwhile, in terms of one star-rated establishments where major improvement was necessary, Blackburn with Darwen has 60, Pendle has 31, Hyndburn has 12 Rossendale has eight and Burnley three.

However, Ribble Valley had no zero or one star-rated places to get food.

Blackburn with Darwen Council environment boss Cllr Jim Smith said it was ‘key’ that the 60 business owners must get their act together to ensure the safety of their customers.

He said: “My advice to people is to always check what the ratings are before going for a meal.

“I only go to the ones that have four or five stars who are proud to to put their ratings in the front window.

“We only want the best for our residents and we want those who have lower ratings to work harder to get the standards up and they should do that for their own sake.”

Meanwhile, Pendle had the next highest figure for one and zero ratings with 33 while 512 had the highest five rating.

Cllr Mo Iqbal, leader of the council said: “I want to congratulate those who have complied with the standards.

“But rest assured that others who aren’t will be facing stringent checks from the council to raise the standards as public safety is important and I would support taking action against those who have not.

The Lancashire Telegraph attempted to contact all of the one star-rated food establishments.
