A SHOCKING video shows police officers being attacked by youths with fireworks on bonfire night.

Teams out dealing with anti-social behaviour in Tunstill Square, Brierfield, were targeted with rocket fireworks as they were waiting for the fire service to assist with a blaze that had been set in the street.

A 17-year-old teenager has since been arrested and will be dealt with in due course.

A police spokesman said: “Dedicated officers are currently out and about dealing with reports of firework anti-social behaviour in order of keeping the community safe.

“Whilst officers were awaiting for the fire service to extinguish a fire on Tunstill Square a group of individuals thought it would be appropriate to target the police with rockets. This will not be tolerated, and officers will be conducting enquiries to locate whose responsible.

“One 17-year old male has been detained and will be dealt with appropriately.”

In later statement at 9.45pm, police said: "Fire services have safety put out the fire on Tunstall Square however somebody thought it would be ‘OK’ to set another wheelie bin on fire as soon as the fire services left.

"Officers from the taskforce have located a male who is believed to be responsible who has been arrested on suspicion of arson and currently in custody.

"This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated, and offenders will be dealt with."

Officers working in Hyndburn last night were also subjected to abuse from teenagers, with another social media post on their Facebook page pleading with parents to come and pick up their children.

It read: “Officers have been out in the Avenue Parade/Coppice area where we have been greeted by groups of kids who started to throw fireworks directed at police.

"If you know that your child is out and in this area, please can you consider collecting them."
