HOUSES in Oswaldtwistle were hit with flooding on Monday night.

Some homes on George Street after a river culvert on Pickup Street became blocked by tree waste.

This morning, Hyndburn Council have sent road sweepers to clear sludge and debris from the road.

Lancashire County Council are also clearing any road gullies on George Street, Moscow Mill Street & Pickup Street are blocked.

Fire crews called at around 6.50pm to Oswaldtwistle last night along with police and council staff to help deal with the water.

Four crews from Hyndburn and Burnley were at the incident on Moscow Mill Street for about four hours and a high volume pump was used to help drain excess water.

Roads were closed by police in the areas surrounding the flooding.

Hyndburn council staff also went to last nights flooding and have been working in the area this morning to clear debris.

A Council spokesperson said; “After last night’s heavy rain, some properties on George Street, Oswaldtwistle were affected by flooding.

"This was caused by a river culvert near Pickup Street becoming blocked by tree debris. The Fire Service managed to unblock the river culvert.

"This morning Hyndburn Borough Council have deployed road sweepers to clear sludge and debris from the road and Lancashire County Council are also clearing any road gullies on George Street, Moscow Mill Street & Pickup Street that have became blocked.”

Yesterday, flooding hit Ribble Valley with many roads becoming rivers in the district.

One motorist was left stranded in Sawley while other drivers were forced to find alternatives route.

In Waddington, villagers protected their homes with flood defences and sandbags, to stop water from seeping in through their front doors.

Other flood alerts and warnings which were in affect yesterday have now been removed or reduced as the weather has begun to improve.

Last night, the governments flood information service said that river levels were starting to fall at the Low Moor but remain high as a result of the recent rainfall.

Areas affected by potential flooding include low lying land in Settle, Barnoldswick, Bolton by Bowland, Sawley, Clitheroe, Slaidburn, Dunsop Bridge, Chipping and Ribchester.

High river levels are possible on the Rivers Ribble and Hodder, Stock Beck, River Loud, Mearley Brook, Pimlico Brook and their tributaries.

In last nights post, a spokesperson said: "There is the chance of further sporadic heavy showers overnight, however we are not currently expecting flood warning levels to be reached.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are checking defences. Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses."
