THERE is a real poignancy to this photo which is fitting as it was taken on the last day of the former Blackburn market in 1964.

We have published a few old market pictures in the past and know how much Bygones’ readers enjoy them.

This one is is a little bit special with the Evening Telegraph photographer having been sent on to King William Street and the market square to capture the stalls for the last time before redevelopment work began.

In the background you can make out the side of Blackburn town hall with the stalls on the right roughly standing on what would become British Home Stores when the new shopping centre was built.
