A LOWER Darwen grandmother has just celebrated 50 years with Blackburn Cathedral’s Renaissance Singers.

Soprano Alizon Elliott, 77, began singing at school and then joined Blackburn Bach Choir under the directorship of Dr John Bertalot in 1970.

Born in Darwen and married to David, the former administrator has three children and four grandchildren.

Mrs Elliott said: “I find singing lifts my spirits and is hugely enjoyable and great fun.

“I like early music, especially early church music.

“I intend to go on singing while my voice holds up.”

Dr Bertalot said: “It’s a great joy to salute Alizon on this special anniversary.

"Any choir in the country would treasure her fine musicianship and lovely bell-like voice but in Alizon they would also have one of those people whose presence radiates warmth, humour and love for other people," he added.

"Add to this her leadership qualities and appreciation of the importance of people as people, not just voices, and you have a very rare asset,” Dr Bertalot said.
