A MAN and a teenager have been arrested after a “vicious and traumatic” machete attack on a woman during a house burglary.

Police were called to Warwick Street in Leigh at around 2.20am yesterday to reports that two masked men forced their way into a home.

They then threatened the female occupant with machetes while assaulting her. The offenders made off on foot with a number of items.

The woman, aged in her 40s, suffered serious cuts to her hands and went to hospital for treatment. She has since been discharged.

With support from Greater Manchester Police’s dog unit, officers detained two people. A 25-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and remain in custody for questioning.

Detective Sergeant Jim Harris, of Wigan CID, said: “This was a vicious and traumatising attack that caused an awful amount of distress for the victim who suffered serious cuts during the ordeal."
