A SLEEPING drunk who became abusive and aggressive when police woke him up had 13 hours in a police cell to sleep it off.

Blackburn magistrates heard Paul David Adams had been causing problems on Douglas Place, shouting, swearing and threatening residents.

By the time the police arrived he had fallen asleep in a garden chair and reacted badly when he was roused.

Adams, 51, of Pendle Drive, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly. He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £85 costs and £22 victim surcharge.

Adam Bonney, prosecuting, said the police officer who roused the defendant had intended to take him home but eventually had to arrest him.

Ian Huggan, defending, said his client accepted he had given the officer little choice but to arrest him.

"He was taken into custody at 9.30pm and released at 10.30am the following day," said Mr Huggan.
