A BOLTON driving instructor with more than 20 years of experience has raised concerns over the amount of reckless motorists speeding through the town.

Janet Holland has been showing learners the ropes in the borough for 23 years and said dangerous driving has risen – and the problem is getting "worse and worse".

"Competitive driving", people using bus lanes incorrectly and an increase in traffic has added to the risks for new drivers, she said.

Roads in Daubhill and Halliwell Road are areas in the town where this behaviour is regularly going on, Janet added.

Janet said: "There is so much bad driving in Bolton.

"People are cutting learners up because they don't want to get stuck behind them.

"Drivers get right up close and beep their horns.

"On hills, learners will be worrying about drivers being right up behind them then they might stall and get stressed and upset.

"There was none of this when I started.

"It's getting gradually worse and worse at the moment.

"The roads are getting busier and the bus lanes are a nightmare.

"Learners must use bus lanes if they are out of operation hours but most other drivers don't know how to use them so they don't use them.

"This makes it difficult for us as the bus lane starts to end and they are cutting back in to the left.

"And drivers emerging from side roads come halfway out across the bus lane forcing us to brake or try to move out but nobody wants to let learners in.

"There is so much competitive driving going on as well with lots of people showing off and taking risks.

"The attitude of people on the road is awful.

"There is just so much aggression and no consideration for learners or anybody.

"It is not getting easier. I have to keep my eye on what the learner driver is doing as well as keeping myself and my car safe from everybody else."

Janet also added that some car drivers think they can just "shove" motorbikes "off the road" too.

Bolton and District Advanced Motorists associates co-ordinator Lynn Jordan does not think speeding has "necessarily" increased but people's quality of driving has got worse with motorists in more of a rush.

She said: "Professional standards of driving have deteriorated.

"There is a lack of respect of anyone else on the road.

"We live in a society where everyone is in a rush all the time. We all have to be somewhere at a certain time."
