A COUNCIL has awarded the contract to extend a school’s special educational needs provision to include a larger classroom, sensory, therapy and group teaching rooms.

The deal is for a classroom extension, external canopy and internal alterations at St Cuthbert’s Church of England Primary School in St Alban’s Road, Darwen.

The £235,767.60 contract has gone to Forrest Joinery and Construction Contracts Ltd of Pleckgate Road, Ramsgreave, Blackburn.

The contract was awarded by Blackburn with Darwen Council after a competitive tendering exercise.

The tender figure falls within the allocated budget of £285,000 approved by the borough’s Executive Board last month and comes out of a £616,000 Special Educational Needs (SEN] grant from the government.

The school currently caters for 221 students from ages 4-11, with 13 SEN pupils.

The new break out areas, sensory, therapy and group teaching rooms and an outdoor play zone was also needed allow the school to cater for an additional three to five pupils and if possible to accommodate additional pupils for future proofing.
