A MAN trashed his mum’s home after a row over him playing his music too loud.

Blackburn magistrates heard Sean Russell damaged internal walls, doors, bathroom fittings lamps and a baby gate during his drink and drug-fuelled rampage.

He eventually left the house carrying a hammer and a knife.

Russell, 26, of Walton Street, Colne, pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in a public place, assaulting his mum, Teresa Hickson, and criminal damage. He was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison suspended for 12 months, made subject to a community order for 12 months with 25 days' rehabilitation and 80 hours' unpaid work.

He was ordered to pay £1,500 compensation, £85 costs and £122 victim surcharge and made subject to a restraining order, which prohibits him from having any contact with his mum, for 12 months.

Scott Parker, prosecuting, said Mrs Hickson said her son turned nasty when he had drink or drugs or both.

On the day of the incident he started drinking in the morning and was playing his music too loud.

“She told him to turn it down but he refused, grabbed her by the wrists and pushed her out of the room, damaging her watch in the process,” said Mr Parker.

“She actually left her own home because she didn’t feel comfortable while he was there.”

Mr Parker said when she returned at 10.30am the next morning her home had been wrecked.

He said a neighbour heard loud banging in the house at 8am and saw Russell with a hammer in his hand. He later saw the defendant come out of the house with the hammer in one hand and a large kitchen knife in the other.

David Leach, defending, said at the time Russell was recently out of a long-term relationship and staying with his mum. “He describes what happened on this day as disgusting,” said Mr Leach.

“He is appalled by his own behaviour at a time when he was emotionally unstable because of the relationship breakdown.”

Mr Leach said when his client walked out of the house with a hammer in one hand and a knife in the other he didn’t have any dispute with anyone who was on the street at the time.

“To his credit he has not had a drink since this incident in March,” said Mr Leach.
