BURNLEY has become one of the most coronavirus-infected boroughs in England, surpassing both Blackburn with Darwen and Hyndburn on the list of places with the highest rates.

A total of 182 new cases in the borough has led to Burnley being placed third on the list – with only Bolton and South Tyneside having a higher rate of COVID-19 infections.

The figures, for the seven days to September 21, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

In Bolton, 628 new cases were recorded in the seven days to September 21 – the equivalent of 218.4 per 100,000 people.

Bolton continues to record the highest rate in England, up from 201.0 in the seven days to September 14.

South Tyneside has the second highest rate, up from 100.7 to 205.3 with 310 new cases.

Burnley is in third place, where the rate has risen from 112.5 to 204.7, with 182 new cases.

Here is the list in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to September 21; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to September 21; rate of new cases in the seven days to September 14; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to September 14.
