THE government’s decision to exempt informal child care arrangements from its ban on social gatherings and household mixing has been welcomed.

On Monday it announced that the restrictions would not apply to looking after children under the age of 14 or vulnerable adults where it is necessary for caring purposes

A Blackburn with Darwen Council spokesman said "We are particularly pleased the government have announced new measures for child care.

"Many of our residents had been in touch asking whether grandparents, family and friends could still pick up children from school and help with childcare?

"Concerns were raised after the government announced a ban on all residents across our borough from mixing with people they don’t live with.

"However on Monday Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced the new exemption for looking after children under the age of 14 or vulnerable adults where it is necessary for caring purposes.

"It covers both formal and informal arrangements. It does not allow for play dates or parties but it does mean a consistent childcare relationship that is vital for somebody to get to work is allowed."
