WELL over a hundred new coronavirus infections have been added to East Lancashire’s count in the last 24 hours, as new cases soar across the country.

A further 168 people tested positive for COVID-19 according to the latest figures released by Public Health England on Saturday.

Of those, the highest number of new cases was recorded in Blackburn with Darwen, with 50 infections bringing the borough’s total number of new cases to 2,284.

There were 37 new cases reported from within the borough of Hyndburn, bringing the area’s total to 739.

Burnley recorded 31 new cases, meaning 879 people have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of the outbreak in March.

Rossendale’s count rose by 27 to 547.

A further 22 new cases were reported from within Pendle, which has recorded the second highest number of cases in East Lancashire with 1,106.

The Ribble Valley, which has recorded the lowest number of cases and has the lowest infection rate in Lancashire, saw its total increase to 265 after reporting one new case.

All six boroughs will be placed under lockdown on Tuesday.
