No new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Oxford in the last 24 hours.

The Public Health England figures show, as of 9am on Friday, the city has 1,104 cases. A further 10 cases were recorded during the same period across Oxfordshire.

Despite Oxford hovering at the threshold for an amber alert, which is triggered by an average weekly infection rate of 25 cases per 100,000 people, the city also does not appear on the latest Government’s watchlist.

While the last amber alert at the end of August put Oxford in the top 20 local authorities in England due to a large national increase in cases the city is now far below the worst affected areas.

Across the UK there were another 4,322 positive tests.

The Office for National Statistics estimate there were actually 6,000 newly infected people a day between September 4 to 10.

The reproduction number, or R value, of coronavirus transmission across the UK also remains above 1.

Data released on Friday by the Government Office for Science and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) shows the estimate for R is between 1.1 and 1.4. The higher R is above one, the faster the epidemic is growing.

Yvonne Doyle, medical director at Public Health England, said: “We’re seeing clear signs this virus is now spreading widely across all age groups and I am particularly worried by the increase in rates of admission to hospital and intensive care among older people.

"This could be a warning of far worse things to come.

"We must all play our part in controlling the virus by continuing to wash our hands, wear face coverings and follow social distancing rules.
